The Bright Sadness

During the season of Lent we ran across this phrase, “The Bright Sadness.” Immediately our ears perked up, as we dove into all the different meanings of these beautiful words stuck together so oddly, so oppositely. The phrase made me think and feel. It also slowly began to encompass something I had been starting to experience in my heart about my own life. Sadness, trial and the aching of this earth are not detached from the bright, resurrecting hope of God. These two ideas actually hold hands very easily and should walk together intertwined always, shamelessly. There are many awe-striking moments on this broken, beautiful planet, but there are also moments that make us feel out of control and weak.  These “out of control” moments do not detach us from God. In a deeper sense, they may even knit us to his heart and life. Christ is the brightness in every ounce of life.  He is the greatest power in this universe and will fill us to walk through every moment.

I love the church, the wife of God, the way God uses to touch the earth.  As I grew up I looked at the church as the group of people who were perfect and had it together.  I’m older now and have attempted and failed for long enough to fit into this image.  We are ordinary, broken, beautiful people who have the common ground of clinging to God daily for sustenance.  We believe in new beginnings, redemption, renovation and overcoming for ourselves, as well as those around us, because of the bright savior and teacher, Jesus and we want to offer this hope life to the world around us.

So this collection of songs is some of the spiritual journaling of my last few years.  It comes from me understanding my ordinary human condition and my deep love for Jesus and the life he brings along in Him.   I do not love and believe these things because of citizenship, my role or title in the church or because I am supposed to. I believe this because I have felt my own humanity and my need to be in touch again with my creator.  The Bright Sadness is the accepting of the brokenness in myself and in the world around me but always intertwining the overarching thought of Christ’s closeness, his free fellowship, his redemption and compassion, His Brightness.

A moon roof

Just when you think everything is in order and all is dandy, your ceiling falls in, literally!

You're thinking, "Shannon what are you talking about?"

Well, last night I noticed a leak in the ceiling near my bedroom window. The wall seemed to be saturated and the paint was starting to bubble from the water draining behind it. I put down some towels and moved all the things away from the window in case the leak grew to a stream or gush, you know!

This morning everything looked the same, no real change in the shape or size of the leak so I ventured off to work. I sent a friendly email to the landlords to let them know about the situation at hand...figured they'd want to get a jump on fixing it!

Well let's just say we didn't jump fast enough!

I just got an informative email from them saying "the water saturated the drywall on the ceiling causing it to fall in." Oh NO, not good! Not good at all...

Apparently due to the torrential down pour this morning, my ceiling caved in. The drywall gave and left a rather nice opening for me to look through when I arrive home tonight.

I mean, I've always wanted a moon roof but this is ridiculous! So much for cleaning my room yesterday, ha!

11:30 PM - night of the tragedy...So I don't usually add on to blogs but I wanted all of you to see what I was talking about...

Now would that be considered a moon roof or a sun roof?

I bought a wall map for my office! Yes a United States wall map...

...and you're probably wondering why I'm telling you this!

Well the reason is, I am super excited about getting to work tomorrow, hanging my wall map and placing tacts on the places I've been all over the US of A:)

Sad? Yes but I am super giddy about my $10 purchase which will

A. Bring me great happiness

B. Complete my office decorations

and

C. give me something to talk about at work tomorrow!

Dear Sabastian

Dear Sabastian (that's my Montero Sport),

The past six years have been amazing. We have made so many memories together - countless road trips to the beach, the mountains, distant cities, and back home again. You've been with me for every stop sign, traffic jam, constuction zone and pothole. We've had our run in with the cops (2 speeding tickets and a seatbelt ticket to which I still plead "innocent") as well. You've been the best ride I've had in years.

However, the past few months have left much to be desired. You haven't been as dependable as you usually are. You've never left me stranded on the side of the road, but you've come close a few times. You make funny noises - you just don't sound the same anymore. And, let's be honest, things that should go up - don't (your antenna). I know it's embaressing not only for me but for you as well.

To put it bluntly, and in the most kind way possible, I feel like our relationship is coming to an end and I'm looking for other options. I hope you don't feel like I'm neglecting you, but I promise you'll find someone else.

Remember yesterday when I was rambling on and on discussing my thoughts out loud dealing with reaching out to the community of Buckhead?

...yes I know it was a rather long post but, I was caught up in the moment...

Well Jeff Henderson sent me a link to something amazing! Amazingly Amazing! It bascially captured what I was hoping to do when I was talking about heading in to local coffee shops and hot shots in the area.

What are a few terms to describe Christians in Atlanta?

"I think Christians are non-tolerant, narrow minded and hypocritical people!"

That's a pretty strong statement huh? Well that is a statement made by a guy at the Peachtree Tavern in Buckhead. Now before you start getting defensive about his statement, let me set this story up for you:

Monday night, Jim Kimball (author of the book 'They like Jesus but not the Church') went out to a local hangout spot in Buckhead (Peachtree Tavern). Jim is from California and was in town to speak at 722 Tuesday night, so he wanted to go out into the community to get a feel for the area. Knowing that he would probably run into non-believers, he carried a note pad and pen so he could ask that very question above and document the responses.

He approached three guys in the bar and asked them if they would answer few questions for a book he was writing about the church. They agreed to listen and answer and that is where the statement above came from. All three guys actually used the word hypocritical when answering the question.

After talking with the guys for a few minutes he asked the question "Have you ever heard of Buckhead Church?" All three said No! So Jim decided to ask a few more people this same question. He asked four more people in the Tavern if they had heard of Buckhead Church. The results showed that 7 out of the 7 he asked had never heard of Buckhead Church. Now, for those of you not in Atlanta, Buckhead Church is only about a mile from Peachtree Tavern...

Arghh...

My heart broke as I was listening to Jim tell this story at 722. Knowing that people in our community have never heard of our church and feel that Christians are narrow minded and hypocritical...that's a punch to the stomach right there. It hurts because it tells me that we're not doing enough! We are not reaching out enough. Not just Buckhead Church, because Jim could have mentioned any church and gotten the same response, but just we as Christians in general.

It makes me wonder if we (the church, all churches) have gotten so wrapped with our stages, lights and talented musicians, that we've missed the whole part about evangelism. You know reaching out to those who need to hear about Jesus. Letting them know about our Savior and the forgiveness and grace that he gives. Telling them about faith and showing them how to love like He did. Explaining that Jesus died for their sins...that He gives living water and if they give their life to Him they will never thirst again. All of that is way more important than a building and sound board.

I just want to run to the highest building in Buckhead and scream to the top of my lungs "Jesus loves you." I want to walk into the local coffee shops and start conversations, open up the doors of communication, pour into the people of my community. I don't want to hand out tracks or scare people to Jesus by telling them they're going to Hell if they're not in church. I want to POUR in to people. Hear their story, learn about their goals and dreams, offer them a listening ear, invite them to lunch, to events, to church, make a difference! I want to set the world on fire...on fire for Him...for Jesus!

I want to get rid of this negative image that people have of Christians! I want to make so that everyone has heard of the local church! I want to change lives and encourage hearts.

Fire Proof

No one really believes me when I tell them that I have a friend who eats fire. It's not one of those everyday jobs but I seriously do have a wonderful friend who is fire proof.

Her name is Lindsey and she is one of the blessings in my life. Lindsey has an amazing heart for God and uses her fire eating talent to send a message. You ask, What message is that, danger? No...

Lindsey has had several opportunities to travel with tours and artists bringing her fire eating ability in to the mix of sharing the Gospel. We call it creative evangelism and it's a simple strategy of bringing in elements that will reach our youth in today's society. When you look around at our kids today there is such a variety. You have the skater kids, the punk kids, the goth kids, the hip hop kids, etc. When you have such an eclectic group of youth, it's best to play into their interests. This is why adding things like BMX bikes and fire eating attract those kids that we're praying to reach!

So pray for Lindsey as God uses her to reach what some thought were the unreachable!

Talk about fake

I'm at a loss right now...

You see, this past weekend we went on a hunt, a BIG hunt!

Brock, Auny, Lindsey and I were on a mission to find Big Foot's relatives since Big Foot was reported to be "Found" last week by two Georgia men up in the Georgia mountains near Blairsville. We looked everywhere...over the mountains and through the woods, Grandmother's house, the local antique shops, this amazing little Italian restaurant and even the Holiday Inn express. Sadly, we came up empty handed.

We were bummed, thinking we hadn't looked hard enough or searched long enough until this report crossed my desk this morning:

Can you believe that? I feel a little betrayed. I feel like someone just told me there was no Santa Claus... wait what? ...there's no Santa Claus? Arghhh Stab to the heart again!

Well the only bright side I see is that if Big Foot was not found then that means he's still out there:)

Dance or Die!

Tomorrow is the BIG day! The one we've all been waiting for since their first album dropped!

Yep, tomorrow is the much anticipated release of family force 5's sophomore record titled "Dance or Die".

Thanks to my good friend Brock, I have had the chance to listen to it for the past few days and I must say, It ROCKS...but I expected nothing less than that from these amazing guys, ha!

If you've never heard of Family Force 5 then your a few years behind but, there is always time to catch up! Here's a little description: "A phoenix rising from the ashes of the Dirty South, Family Force 5 creates a lethal mix of punk, rock, funk and mind-altering grooves that's guaranteed ghetto music straight from the heart, cut with a healthy dose of fried grits." They pack one of the best live performances ever and I'll admit, I'd drive miles upon miles to be a part of their show:)

Let me tell you about someone...

He is a great friend. He loves adventure and anything that could potentially be dangerous...you know, swords, razor blades, dirt bikes, backyard zip lines... he has a passion for Chocolate and a hobby called FOOD, good food! Thai food, Mediterranean food, Indian food, Mexican food, Turkish food, basically anything un-Americanized... well except for Cajun food but he cooks that himself in this magic little box called the Cajun Cooker! Let me tell ya, it's the best food you'll ever eat.

He lives at this amazing little place that we've renamed Gypsy Land! It has everything you need for social gatherings...good food, a stone bonfire pit, a gigantic slip-n-slide, a frightening zip line, dirt bikes and this little Chihuahua that barks ferociously when you drive up. It's way better that Six Flags and Disney world, I promise.

Some described him as "sick" but not because he has a cold or some form of disease, but because he is unbelievably talented. He has a mystery about him that leaves you with so many questions like "how the heck did he do that? Did you see him bend that key in his hand? Did he really just make that storm calm?" No, he's not a body builder and he's not the Messiah...He's an illusionist! A Christian illusionist at that.

Please Don't Freak out on Me and The Miracles Tour are two of his brand new shows. He does some crazy things that will definitely leave your mind wondering and you on the edge of your seat. Here's a good way to describe it... Take some illusions paired up with a few dangerous stunts, add in some "laughing till you pee your pants" humor, followed by a message based on the greatest story ever told and you have a Brock Gill show!

So how many of you knew who I was talking about before I revealed, haha??

Wanted: Friend-sitter

In need of a friend sitter this Thursday and Friday night for a 24-year old athletic trainer...Someone to entertain my friend while I'm out of town for the weekend!

Must love to pay for things like dinner, on-demand movies, concerts, occasional articles of clothing such as jeans from Buckle or sweat pants from Dick's Sporting Goods. Must have an incredible sense of humor and must be able to tolerate intense sarcasm. Needs to be willing to break out into some ghetto dance moves when "Apple Bottom Jeans" plays in the car or can at least attempt to dance(no dance history required but recommended).

Dinner time fun!

Fun things to do while waiting for dinner to arrive...tested by yours truly!

List all 50 states in under two minutes(it's harder than you think)

Challenge wars...challenge your dinner guests to crazy things. Example: "I bet you won't go ask the waiter for his number!"

Write DEATH on all the Splenda and Sweet-n-Low packets to remind the next table that sits down that these items are unhealthy! Drink water people!!!

Have a complete conversation about cheese. Saying the words Gouda and Gorgonzola will make anyone laugh.

Try to eat 6 Saltine crackers in two minutes without drinking anything...it can't be done, I promise, but it's hilarious to watch.

Spit balls are always a crowd favorite.

Oh and lastly, there's this coaster game where you flip it off the side of the table and catch it. It takes skill so next time you see me just ask and I'll show you:)

Change the laugh

Laughing!

It all makes us feel better and it's contagious. We use it to express joy, sometimes it's associated with awkward moments and it can be one of those things that makes a room full of bitterness turn upside down. When I think about laughing I can remember all these times in my life where I've laughed so hard that tears appeared or times where I was completely upset but someone in the room laughed and I immediately had a giggle.

I feel like there are people that have distinct laughs. You know, where you can here it a room a say "That's Josh laugh" or "That laugh sounds so much like Megan's." Tonight at dinner we had a discussion on laughter. Brent, a friend from NC, brought up the fact that he wanted a different laugh... a distinct one that was memorable. He has been trying to change the way he laughs and I don't think that's possible. He thought about closing his eyes when he laughed or throwing his head back and chuckling. It made me think about the way I laugh. It was so funny watching the five of us, trying to laugh differently but ending up laughing hysterically at each other with the same laugh we were born with.

We tired laughing like Tigger...and that was pretty ridiculous. We threw in the Pillsbury Dough Boy laugh for kicks. We even tried the sophisticated laugh where you just laugh basically one time in a deep voice, "HA." (You definitely need to hear it to fully appreciate it:) Oh we also thought about picking a specific laugh and using it through an entire conversation. That was funny too.

It's amazing the fun you can have with laughing. Have you ever tired to change your laugh? And if so, does it make you laugh more trying to laugh differently, hahahaha??

classy to trashy!

I have realized that my life is so much fun, ha! I always seem to end up on these adventures and every night is an experience. Last night was one of those awesome adventures that took me all around the city of Atlanta, literally!

I got off work yesterday and I was little worn out. Honestly, I could have grab a blanket at 5:30 PM, put in "51 Dates" and fallen asleep to the sound of Adam Sandler trying to be Hawaiian, but I didn't. You see, I had agreed earlier in the week to go see my friend Noah's band play at a little place in 5 points and I try to never break promises, so at 7:30 PM the adventure began. I met some friends(Mal, Jen, Nathan, Wade) for dinner at one of my favorite places in town, Eclipse De Luna! Dinner was great, conversation was great, tapas were AMAZING and the best part, besides the black bean hummus, was even though the wait was an hour and half, somehow I managed to walk in, request a table, work some magic and get seated immediately...haha, Big Time,ha(not quite). But what a great way to start off an unforgettable evening.

After dinner we ventured off toward downtown but we still had about an hour to kill before heading to the show so Nathan and Wade decided to take us somewhere I've never been...the top of the Westin. I know I'm about to sound real touristy but bear with me...You can see the WHOLE city from up there. It was absolutely gorgeous! I could see Turner Field, The Georgia Dome and The Bank of America building which is my favorite building to see at night. I was like a little kid seeing the gates of Disney World for the first time. While there, I learned a little history, had a few laughs and felt very ritzy sitting 72 stories above downtown ATL!

Funny things I must document for my memory sake(you may not get theses but just ask and I'll tell you what they all refer to)...

The use of the word intimate...parking decks...fruit punch...pineapple's effects on skin...electric fireplace...Lucky street...a little trashy...bullet proof vests on carriage rides...streets you should never go on...graffiti tunnels...revolving rooms!

OK now back to the night...

After our roof top experience at the Westin, feeling like royalty we headed over to 5 points where we definitely went from classy to trashy in about 5 minutes. You see, the place Noah was playing reminded me of some of the venues I had been to in college. Dirty, loud, sticky floors but completely awesome. The bands playing were the classic grungy fellows with bed head and wrinkled clothes. The audience was a mixture of slightly drunk college kids and somewhat preppy adults. A true memory worth documenting:) We rocked out the sounds of Rantings of Eva and I must say it was great to see Noah in his element, playing bass without a care in the world and looking like a rock star!

We had a blast touring the city, feeling glamorous, listening to some rock n roll in a trashy heaven and just experiencing all of what the city of Atlanta has to offer!

5 places at once

If you could be in 5 places at once where would you be right now?

For me it would be...

1. Sitting on my parent's front porch in North Carolina watching my puppies Cambi and Arley run around the yard. A glass of Mama's sweet tea in one hand and a banana sandwich in the other. Waving to my dad as he drives by on a tractor and getting ready for a game a catch with my 6-year niece, Summer.

2. On a plane to Texas with Brock and Auny headed towards Rock the Desert! Two days hanging out with Family Force 5 & the Newsboys pretty much beats sitting on my couch watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

3. In New York City with Kim getting all dressed up to go see a Broadway show or just to walk downtown the streets of Manhattan.

4. Seattle...for many reasons:)

5. Sitting on top of Vespers at Fort Caswell while listening to the sound of the guitar and breathing in the ocean air. Being completely surrounded by my closest friends and being able to feel that little touch a love all around me!

For the past two days, while driving to and from work I have been listening to talking on the radio more than music. I used to hate it when there was nothing on to listen to and I've pretty much resorted to the Ipod and CDs because of all the radio mumbo jumbo. But for some reason I have really enjoyed the topic of conversation for the past two days.

Yesterday while driving home the topic of conversation was "what makes people White Trash?" They had people calling in with all there WT moments and it was very amusing to hear all these creative ways to have fun. One guy asked if tying a rope to a mattress and dragging four people around a bonfire for fun consisted of being White Trash...I said no because I used to do fun things like that all the time growing up. Another caller mentioned that she had a toilet in her front yard that was being used as flower pot. Hummm I have to admit that one is probably a little WT.

I brought up this concept up at lunch today with a few co-workers in hopes of getting opinions on what WT meant to them. We came up with a few collective thoughts but nothing that really defined it for me so I turned to Wikepedia. Their definition reads a little like this...

White trash is a pejorative term targeted at lower social class white people with poor prospects and/or low levels of education. To call someone white trash is to accuse a white person of being economically, educationally and/or culturally bankrupt. White trash should be differentiated from the more socially acceptable term Redneck, as each has an unique historical etymology and context in modern usage. While white trash is most commonly used as a pejorative, low- to middle-income rural whites often self-identify as rednecks.

Totally a mouth full!

It's interesting the terms that we use these days to categorize people. We throw out these labels like Redneck, White Trash, Ghetto, Snobby, etc... but when we step back and actually think about it, these terms refer to all of us in some way or another.

All of us have a redneck/white trash side, I mean who hasn't played in the mud or sat around a bonfire or gone sledding on some object besides a sled. All hands should be down because I know you've done at least one of these.

We all have a ghetto side! Hands up if you like to break it down on the dance floor or talk in some sort of slang or order chicken wings to your heart's content... my hand was raised for all of those.

And a snobby side...oh boy do we all have that one! I'm not even going to touch that category... but we can all be a little snobby at times!

I think that placing a term on something we've done or something we do should be embraced not made fun of! I'm proud that I've had countless WT moments, memorable redneck adventures, plenty of ghetto fabulous nights and I'm even proud of my snobbiness even though that one I keep under raps most of the time, haha!

So who else wants to embrace their so-called "category?"

Shannon White
She wears the closest thing to a permanent smile and has dozens of friends who know people—famous people. One weekend she might spend in Panama City, the next in a large backyard in Nashville screaming down a zip line.

With seemingly no regard for gas prices and giving very little heed to what makes up a civilized good time, Shannon White, weekend warrior and ministry assistant for NAMB's Communications Team, also has a heart for students.

This summer she spent about a month with hundreds of them helping call them to Christ, to service, to missions, to serious discipleship.

"I believe the children are our future," she says, without the slightest hint of irony.

So when she's not hanging out with illusionists, musicians, NAMB staff, otherwise famous people, or removing seats from unlocked vans, you can bet she's out there helping save the world and its future.

A story of Grace...

There have been countless sermons that have spoken directly to my soul since I began my walk with the Lord. I have heard great speakers talk about great things in great churches all over the United States. I’ve heard many stories of how people’s lives were changed but none quite like the one I heard today!

It was the story of a 22 year old girl named Ashley narrated by Louie Giglio. I would love to be able to tell you the story from memory but even if I typed out the entire thing it would never be as powerful as the way Louie presented it tonight. It was a story of grace and a story that brought tears streaming down my face. I'd love to go in to more detail but I feel like you should hear it for yourself...

So if you’re at work grab your earphones, if you’re at home turn up the volume on your computer speakers and if you tear up easily grab a box of tissues…I promise you’ll need ‘em…

How powerful is God!?

With one person praying consistently and loving the way Christ did and one God more powerful than anything, it took 14 days for one heart to be transformed from not believing at all to getting it! A lake day

I woke up this morning a little earlier than usual for a Saturday. If I had my choice, I would have slept till 2PM to make up for the lack of sleep lately but that wasn't the case today...As I stretched and yawned while getting out of bed, the thought that it would be an eventful day never crossed my mind... I was wrong!

It all began with a field trip to Holly Springs with Jen followed by lunch with April and Aaryn in Woodstock. It was so great to sit and hear all about April's Brazil adventures, Aaryn's time in South Africa and the Philippines and just catching up on all the ministry opportunities we've all been a part of lately. I shared a little about Parties with a Purpose and hopefully within the next month or so April and I can put together a party here in Atlanta!

After lunch, I received a call that made the day perfect. My friend Nathan called with an invite to the Lake. Now in North Carolina we don't have lakes, we have rivers and we take full advantage of being on the river with boats and jet skis and all sorts of water activities! But what I quickly discovered is that in Georgia, being on the lake is the same thing. Nathan, Noah and friends picked Jen and I up on the boat. We went cruising around for a bit ending up in this little spot that can only be described as a Redneck Yacht Club. Let me see if I can describe this so you can fully grasp what I'm saying.... picture about 30 boats (pontoon boats, speed boats, normal sized boats, etc) all anchored in a hidden little nook on the lake. People in rafts, tubes, life vests, etc. floating beside the boats with music blaring and the ones of age kicking back with all sorts of alcoholic beverages. It was quite amusing and I'm kicking myself for not snapping a shot.

We anchored as well near the shore and went for a swim. Noah created this very interesting floatation device he calls a life diaper... basically what you do is put your legs inside the arm holes of a life vest and it fits on you like a diaper so you can float around. It was Classic!

We took out the jet skis which was awesome. Although, I lost my earring because someone decided to fling me off the jet ski like a flailing monkey falling from a tree! Thanks friend.

There were conversations about decks and other crazy unmentionable topics. We laughed so much and just relaxed under the sunshine. Nathan describe it as being in his happy place! I did manage to get a picture of that...

Oh did I mention we almost got caught in a tornado on the river? But I mean, Jen and I always seem to attract natural disasters so it was no big deal, haha!

We ended the day with a late night movie with some friends! One of the best worst movies I've ever seen...A TV movie called Category 7. You must see it!

Such a good day! I wish everyday was a lake day:)

I am totally excited and impatient about when all this will take place!

Brent Moxey moment of the day:

This morning Brent and Adam went for a brisk jog before work. Brent decided to make it into a Navy Seal experience by using sayings like...

Seals don’t leave seals behind.

Bark like a seal.

You’ll live like a seal. Fight like a seal. Die like a seal.

These were all saying of encouragement for Adam! Clever, huh:)

So, as the two "Seals" were jogging/barking/grasping for air down North Point Parkway, an unidentified Montero Sport honked the horn letting the two enthusiastic runners know they were doing a great job. Brent felt the need to acknowledge the vehicle and turned to gesture with a good 'ole wave. Little did he know what was about to occur.

Suddenly out of no where two huge men came and wrestled him to the ground with bats and Joker weapons. When Adam saw the unexpected act of violence he suited up like Batman, swooped in and rescued Brent from the mad men...

OK, I'm totally kidding about the huge men and Adam being Batman...just thought I'd mixed it up a bit:)

What really happened was while Brent was waving to the passing SUV, he accidentally stepped in a hole therefore twisting his ankle a bit and causing him to go down. But instead of face planting into the lush green grass on the side of a major highway, he did a semi tuck and roll which ended up popping him back up in runner position losing no momentum. It was so convincing that Adam actually thought he did it on purpose!

Quite the little Navy Seal huh, ha!

Trivia Night @ 5 Points

Who knew trivia could be so fun yet so frustrating at the same time!?

Tonight Jen, Chris, Brent and I loaded ourselves in the car and headed down to Five Points to play some trivia (oh and eat of course). The guys had discovered this little restaurant pub a few weeks ago and have been attending the trivia night since. Apparently, every time you play and rank in one of the top 4 spots, your points carry over to the next week. Sadly, Chris and Brent had never made it to a top spot:(

Anywho, our goal tonight was to beat the odds and push our team to the top 4. By round three, we were holding strong with a great score. We had answered questions about the Pop group Abba, questions referring to Roman emperors and even questions about Kawasaki jet skis. It's amazing how much useless knowledge we have up in our little noggins.

Sadly, our confidence and momentum was squashed in the four round when these questions were presented:

Soap Suds Zipping By!

Well I woke up this morning a little sore...but let me tell you, it was all worth it!

Yesterday we had a Party With A Purpose, which if you haven't heard about them by now you need to check out the Blog. Anyway we raised money for a lady named Tiffany who is taking a mission trip to Canada(America's hat). Let me tell you a little about her...She is a full time mother and instead of working at a paying job, she works for a ministry the doesn't provide her with a salary. She said that she just feels like the Lord wants her there and with following that call, she is sacrificing a lot. Her family lives very simply. They buy only the things they need and they give with everything they do. She didn't really have the funds to pay off the trip so we decided to pay it off for her and to give her extra to buy books to pass out to the people she comes in contact with. It's amazing what you can do for someone when you come together as a community with one purpose...reaching out!

Now this was no ordinary party! At Brock's house, it's never just an ordinary party! We went all out...Water slide, Zip line, cakes and the best food ever. Here is some video from our fiesta...

Have you ever been on a zip line after sliding down soapy slide? Let's just say it makes for a "sudsy" ride:)




We had a blast being goofy, hanging out and raising money for someone in need! You should come to the next Party...It'll be the best decision ever!

You see, our friend Matt from Eleventyseven went to Washington for a few days and forgot to lock his car doors... which is not a smart idea especially when you have friends like us! So we decided to play a little game called "FIND YOUR SEATS!" I have never laughed so hard in my life and I can't wait to get that phone call from him when he realizes somethings missing:)

Where are his seats you ask... well lets just say we got some good use out of them!

Braiding, chocolate and a little prank

Today has been an absolutely amazing day... Franklin, Tennessee style!

I got to sleep in for the first time since May and it was so refreshing. It's not everyday that I wake up to the smell of fresh poppy seed muffins after a great night of sleep. That's definitely one of the joys of staying at Brock and Auny's! It's also not everyday that I eat a Hamburger, prepared to perfection... and I mean perfection! Let's just say that Brock and Auny are amazing cooks and today was a full day of yummy treats.

Today was also a day full of hilarious events. You see, Brock has added a new addition to his backyard, a zip line! Yes... I said a zip line. There were a few minor kinks in the fun little ride so we spent the early part of the afternoon braiding bungee cords. We actually had such a fun time doing it. We named our braiding experience Gypsy Braiding. You should all try it!

After we finished working on the bungees, we ventured off the downtown Franklin for Thai Food and Chocolate...Two of my favorite things ever. The only sad part was the chocolate wasn't from the Cocoa Tree... I hate that it closed back in February:( I'm still pretty bitter...



...but we made the most of our new chocolate experience at Xoconochco!

The highlight of the night was our little gift for Matt! Have you ever pulled a prank on a friend? Like a really good prank that you were so proud of? Well we definitely did that tonight... Check back tomorrow for the video of our prank!

Tennessee here I come!

In approximately 15 minutes I will be leaving for the great state of Tennessee to spend the weekend with Therron, Brock and Auny! I am super excited since I haven't been up to Nashville since Easter...that is entirely too long to go without seeing some of my favorite people!

I'm sure there will be a lot of hanging out, yummy food, unexpected adventures and tons of laughs...and with all that said off I go!

An Alaskan Reminder...

I got a phone call tonight from a good friend who is doing mission work in Alaska! It was such a joy to talk with him about his experiences and all the things God is doing in his life. His talked about all the people he is meeting and all the needs that are all around him that God is showing him. It's amazing to hear all the stories about the impact he is making and all the lives he is touching just by following God's lead.

Sometimes, hearing what others are learning and seeing can have an impact on what you feel you are missing! When I say missing, I mean all the things that you overlook in your everyday life. God's beauty and grace is all around us and for the past week I've been unable to see it because of the blindfold I've been wearing. I've been so consumed with all the frustrations that I overlooked the joy!

The joy of...
my friends,
my family,
my co-workers,
giving,
the amazing gifts God has given me,
music,
smiling,
conversations,
Krispy Kreme doughnuts,
laughter,
giving hugs,
phone calls,
etc..etc..etc...

That's a lot to overlook!

It always seems that this thing we call "life" gets in the way of the important things. We allow all the things that we can't control to actually control our thoughts, days, hopes, etc. Our minds become consumed with how to get OUR way or how to fix situations to better OUR plan. Wouldn't it be a lot easier to step back, live life for the joy and let God take care of all those "un-controllable" things?

We could stop looking at how to cater to our problems and focus more on the things that need crucial attention like leading people to Christ, rebuilding homes, feeding starving children, giving warm blankets and fresh water to those who need in desperately, or just smiling at people who need a friendly face!

We could take out the frustrations and add to joy back in. There's no greater joy than showing someone the love of Jesus! That sounds like a better plan to me.

Thanks Paul for your little reminders, encouraging words and your heart for reaching people with love and joy!

Why is the page blank?

So I need to write this really important email today and I can't seem to find the right words! It shouldn't be that hard to type out what I'm feeling and what I believe is the right option but, for some reason every time I go to write it my mind goes blank.

Hummm...I wonder where the words go? I think they are hiding in a little tiny compartment in the back of my head because they are scared that the result of the email will not be the answer wanted. Or maybe they have decided to take a little vaca to get back at me for not taking a break this summer. Who knows...all i know is I need them to step up and help me out a little!

You see, I've written several emails in the past expecting some big things to happen but in the end I was left feeling disappointed. I don't want that to happen again. I want the words to be perfect and the person opening the email to connect to what I'm saying. I want them to read it and get so excited that they respond immediately by email, or phone, or twitter(OK maybe not twitter)...but respond quickly because they agree with my proposal and they can't wait to hear more!

Wouldn't that be awesome!

So with all that rambling out, I'm going back to my blank email page. Pray that I find the words and that this situation will turn out for the best...

PCB episodes

Now I promised you stories from Panama City Beach along with pictures of the fun moments and I am not going to let my uneasy mood ruin that blog so here we go...

For Nikki, Patrick and myself this past weekend was a Big Stuf reunion! They got to spend time with the interns they worked with last summer and I got to spend time with the musicians I worked with last summer. It always fun to go and see your friends in their element. Being able to watch Chrystina, Jayce, Ben, Evan and James perform is always a good time. They are so talented at what they do and the best part is they use their gifts to worship the Lord.

For Jen this weekend was about finally getting to see the Panhandle. She had never seen the turquoise water and sugar white sand so we tired to spend all the time we could walking on the gorgeous beach. Another thing that made Jen's weekend special was the fun task of blowing up the air mattress. Now as most of you know they have come out with these little motorized pumps now that literally blow up the mattress in seconds...not for Jen though! She prefers the old fashioned style! Take a look...

Other fun moments from the trip included getting separated from each other on the beach at midnight with no cell phone service, late night room checks(thanks Jen), lifting our hands and spinning around, Schooners for lunch with Ben, crank texts from co-workers(Patty you are in for it), Seaweed balls, cherry snow cones and hysterical conversations about people on bikes, turned over strollers, marriage at a late age, being looped, bottle sizes, twisty cones, etc. It was such a good weekend that we are already planning for next year!






So if you want to take a chance on heading to PCB with some crazy peeps let me know. We'd love to have you along for the journey:)

Dispirited Wake Up Call...

You know you're going to have a hard day when you wake up and immediately feel sick to your stomach. Everything that is swirling around in your head causing a headache and you think that being around people isn't exactly the best remedy for what you're feeling. Something occurred which caused your heart to hurt and your mind to become consumed with overwhelming thoughts. Even though you have a smile on your face, you have tears on the inside that you are praying no one can see. Definitely not a good way to start the day and that's exactly how I woke up this morning.

You see, situations often cause my little mind to dream up all these fun fantasies of how things could be or how I think they should be...but when reality sets in and all the glitz and glamour fade away, instead of being left with my dreams come true, all I'm left with is a headache and a heart full of "what ifs!"

What if I had said that different?
What if I had acted differently?
What if I didn't do that?
What if, What if, What if...
Would it have changed anything or would it still be the same as it's always been?

Frustrated, Complicated, Exhausted, Reluctant, Regretful, Deplorable, Dispirited yet still in the back of my mind Hopeful.

Grrrr...I'm tired of days like today!

Only Two Days Till Darkness

Who's ready to see one of the biggest movies of the year???

...I know you can't see me right now but my hand is raised really high in the air!

I am super excited and kind of anxious for the new Batman movie to come to theaters. I can't wait to have my popcorn in lap, drink in cup holder and nails in the nail biting position. Two days is way too long to wait!

Why the back row?

I was thinking about a concept this morning. It is one that I taught about this summer at SuperWOW. The concept is "Students really do impact today!" Now you may be saying to yourself, DUH but read on. You see, as I was sitting in chapel this morning this concept jumped out at me because of some things I have been noticing over the past week.

When we say that teenagers are the future and that they are the ones that are going to change the world, how many of you actually believe it? Well I whole heartedly do and I think that's why I pour my time and my heart into them... well that and I'm a kid at heart.

Anyway, I had a flash back to a worship service from this summer of the students running, literally running, to get to the first row of seats so they could be the closest. I watched them as they were engaged in not only in the music and magic, but in the teachings. They had their Bibles out, journals open and pen in hand. And it wasn't for looks, they really were taking notes, reading along and intently listening to God's word.

I had students each week that came to seminars early just so they could be on the front row. They answered and had opinions on all the questions we asked and even brought questions of their own. They were hungry for Jesus! I've received countless emails from those students telling me all about the things they are getting involved in and the ways they are impacting their community! In their emails they write about starting Bible studies, organizing prayer meetings, witnessing to friends and even to their parents! Can we say WOW... Kids these days are stepping out and are trying to walk on water to get to Jesus.

Now here's why I tell you all this! It's because of what I've been noticing for the past week. Adults, and I'll include myself, do not run to the front row for worship or church. We don't even really walk to the front row. In church, the back row seems to be the popular place to sit for us "older folks." Even in chapel this morning the front four tables were open and people got there early to sit at the back tables. For some adults, we have to be talked into praying in a group or we look around the table until someone finally agrees to say the blessing at lunch or dinner. Why is that?

I met a five-year old this summer during one of our church group dinners. Her name was Jesse and I will always carry the memory of her raising her arm and jumping up and down to be the one who got chosen to pray for the meal. She was so excited when she was picked and her words were so precious as she asked the Lord to bless the food and the friends. She even threw up a few prayer requests! It was so powerful to see this little girl at such a young age begging to be the one that got to talk to Jesus. Where did that longing go in us?

Now I don't expect adults to run, literally, into events and church settings or grab the microphone when it's time to pray but here's my dilemma... We as adults believe we are wise and that these students should be learning from us yet we set the example that it's OK to not be overly excited about praising Jesus. Some of us don't trust our youth to get involved in leading Bible studies, Vacation Bible Schools, camp positions, various events, etc. but we expect them to carry on this witness when we are gone! How is that going to work? We should be pouring into our teens teaching them all about what we have experienced and sharpening them for the future so that they will pour into teenagers when they are older.

Now here's something for those of you who think your students are to young to make a difference:

In 1 Samuel 16:1-12...
David who was probably around the age of 12 was chosen by God for a special service. There were bigger, better options amongst Jesse’s other sons, but God chose David because of his incredible heart for God. David had a private life of worship as a shepherd of sheep. God used his time with lowly sheep to prepare him to be the greatest conquering king in the history of Israel.

God saw the potential in David, the youngest of Jesse's sons I might add. Shouldn't we look for the potential in our younger ones? We could actually learn a few things from them!!

Here's some fun facts:

• See You at the Pole Prayer Rallies was started by a group of students.
  
• True Love Waits is a student movement toward abstinence.
  
• Loose Change to Loosen Chains was started by a 14 year old, Zack Hunter, who wants to stop slavery and human trafficking.
  
• The most effective mission sending agencies in the world are sending students all over the world and are seeing cultures changed by American teenagers.

Sounds like we should be taking notes from them!

So pour into your students, teach them all that God has taught you, learn from their enthusiasm and excited spirits and allow them to test the waters... Besides they'll never know if they can walk on water if you never let them out of the boat!

I'm in Toccoa, GA!

And you are saying to yourself...Why? Well I'm here to help out with a new camp called MERGE, created by the Georgia Baptist Convention. MERGE is a camp that focuses on missions and fleshes it out through worship, missions, discipleship and fellowship that is customized to fit the needs of students. Youth will have the opportunity to get involved locally helping at the Boys and Girls Club, VBS and several construction projects. Not only will they get to make a difference in the community of Toccoa but they will have a chance to worship and build relationships with fellow churches from around Georgia. It's going to be awesome!

It's day one and God is already doing some amazing things in the hearts of the students, the staff and the community... We are already the talk of the town. Stephany, Chris and I went out to Home Depot and Wal-Mart today to get supplies and all the workers were intrigued by the things we were buying. I mean we did buy 45 paintbrushes, 70 pairs of gloves, 20 wire brushes, 70 pairs of googles, 200 trash bags, paint, traps, and much much more... so I can understand why people were curious. Big things are gonna happen this week!!! Go check out the site and if you weren't involved this year, definitely get involved next year!

Mooing for free chicken!

I'm all about a little adventure and if it involves embarrassing yourself on the adventure, I'm definitely in. Today was my lucky day!

Today, if you didn't know, was Cow Appreciation Day at Chick-Fil-A. What a great idea...I mean who wouldn't want to celebrate cows, right?! Well the celebrating was just the beginning. Apparently if you dressed up like a cow today and headed over to your favorite Chick-Fil-A location you received a free combo meal (drink included).Who wouldn't want to take part in that? Exactly...

So a whole herd of us(literally) put on the spots and headed over to the the Northpoint Mall for a little free food fiasco. It was the most amazing lunch ever. We giggled our little cow tails off!

Oh and if we could have found a 7-11, we would have had a free slurpee for dessert:) What a fabulous way to spend a lunch hour!

Have you ever looked in the mirror at crazy hair? Frustrated. Aggravated. Tense. You swear you’re not going to resign to the bad hair day; instead, you put on a hat.

Or, as you looked out the window you glare into gloomy, cold weather and realize you need some kind of protection for your head and decide—it’s a hat day.

In the past, the “hat” was used by women as an indicator of social status. In biblical times, the hat was worn in the synagogues by the Scribes and the Pharisees and other religious personnel in accordance to their laws. Often the word “hat” is used as a metaphor referring to the different roles we have as women, like the “hat” of motherhood or the “hat” of being a wife. In this devotional, I want you to view the hat as a covering used to hide what you do not want others to see.

Many times, we as women feel the need to cover up our imperfections and flaws in order to be accepted by others and succeed in life. God says the exact opposite in His Word! Just listen to His unconditional love, “But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart’” (1 Samuel 16:7). God simply wants us to come to Him, just as we are… broken, sinful, and imperfect. So celebrate ladies, and take those HATS OFF!

Dear Heavenly Father, I praise you and thank you for creating me. Thank you for loving me just the way I am. I am sorry when I feel inferior and flawed because I know that this hurts your heart. Help me to see myself through your loving eyes today and always. Amen.

Deep Whispers

It's amazing how the Lord will speak to you! For some people they hear God through a voice, for others it's a feeling or through a song, etc. God speaks through everything around us, we just have to be willing to stop and listen. To look for the awesomeness that is around us (as Daniel would say)!

I've had a hard time lately knowing when something is of the Lord. I battle between thinking if it's me that wants things to happen or if it's God. I catch myself analyzing every little detail and reviewing it over and over in my mind. Things that seem so perfect in my head aren't always the "perfect" plan of God. It's a hard line but one thing that I am learning is that God will never steer you in the wrong direction. He may take you into uncomfortable situations but He has a purpose for every moment of your life and He will make His voice heard even if it's a whisper. So listen closely, follow intently and bask in the grace of our Father!

Dear God,

Help me to listen for your voice and your direction in my life! Teach me and show the path that will glorify you and only you. I thirst for your living water and my prayer is that my life will reflect your love.

I love you.

Talk about amazing...

I often have moments where something will truly bothesr me and it effects the way I deal with everything around me. This past Wednesday night was one of those times! I had a lot on my mind and even though I seemed fine on the outside, I was hurting on the inside. But something happened that rocked my world....

I had this student in my seminars named Josh! He was one of the few that consistently sat at the front for every single lesson, focused on the words that God was speaking through Aaron and I.

Wednesday night as I was exiting the stage area, upset about a few things that had occurred that day, Josh was leaving the worship center in the crowded hallway. We crossed paths and he hugged me. He stepped back and said to me, "I know I'm going to Heaven!!" He had so much enthusiasm in his voice and he literally could have done cartwheels down the hall because he was so on fire for God. I could see God's love radiating off of him and he was so excited to share what he had experienced! It rocked my night!

I will never forget the look on his face or the energy that he had...and it was all because Jesus touched him! WOW

Realization...

So I have realized a few things since a week has gone by here on Jekyll Island...

1. I have no time to really write(type) my experiences because every second here is precious time that is dedicated to God, staff bonding and the students... but I love it!

2. Sleep is totally overrated.

3. The bond between people happens so quick here and I have a feeling I've made some life long friends.

4. Bananas and PB makes an awesome breakfast.

Of course there are plenty more but these are the ones from week one.

The past 7 days has been absolutely incredible. I have witnessed God at work in the lives of so many. I am so blessed to have had this opportunity!

Life on the Road

Week one, Sadly over!

I don't think I can fully describe the amazing works of God that I witnessed this week! I saw it in my seminars, through the worship, while watching illusions, playing volleyball, sitting in the counseling room and listening to prime words from the speaker.

Most of you know that I call myself a camp kid because I absolutely love working camps, being at camps and hearing about camps! That may sound childish but the bottom line is that whenever I am part of these camp weeks, I see change...not only in students lives but also in mine.

This week I came across some amazing teenagers. They all came from different stories and they gathered for this one week to be in the presence of God. It was amazing to watch the transformation from day one when there bus pulled up to day four when they left to head home. I met a girl who was living her life all the wrong way and because people loved on her this week and poured into her, she got saved.I met a boy who was set on becoming more of a leader and I know that his is going to drastically change the people around him. I met some of the strongest students ever. Teenagers on fire for God and I know they are going to continue impacting the world.

So to the students from week one... You all are incredible and remember to stay on fire for God, pay it forward and bring change!

Burning sand...

Have you ever played Volleyball in 100 degree weather on hot, burning sand with hundreds of kids?

Well you should because it will definitely bless your day!

Today after an amazing worship service and my first attempt at teaching the 11th and 12th grade seminar( which went awesome) we headed out to the beach for some beach volleyball goodness:) I am loving the interaction the staff has with the students. It truly blesses your day to hear kids tell you how much fun they are having learning about Jesus and expressing their love around a community. Incredible...

Day one of the first week of SuperWOW Jekyll Island is done and I must say, it went by way too fast. We had such a good time greeting all the students and Youth leaders. And by fun I mean joyous parking lot time. Let me set up this scene for you...

5 guys and 1 girl (that'd be me)
100 degree weather... humid cause is rained (yuck)
a little over 700 students
3 foam baseball bats
2 spongy baseballs
and 1 tee shirt launcher!

Needless to say we had a very interesting day:) I mean how many people can say they watched two people get shot with a tee shirt launcher from about 5 feet? I can! HAHA

Moving on, it was so great tonight to watch these students engage in worship. Hands were raised and all mouths were singing! AMAZING

Can't wait for tomorrow!

I'm a bit tired from all my training and loading and socializing and everything else that goes with camp life so I thought this would be a good fill in for me:)

Bring it...

Well training has officially begun and in less than two days I'll been heading towards the Florida line to begin my work at SuperWOW camp for three weeks...how fun:)

As most of you know, I have been working at camps since the summer of 2002 and I've found this deep desire to be involved in helping to shape the hearts of young people. This summer I have the opportunity to work in a different way by leading seminars for the 11th and 12th grade students. When I was offered this position I was overjoyed and I had no fear about doing this. But over the past three weeks, I have developed a slight apprehension of this journey I am about to begin. I have this sense of not being enough and not being prepared enough...but someone said something this morning that helped. The words were, "We're never gonna be enough, but we don't have to be. God is enough and with Him by our side His glory will be revealed." WOW, talk about the perfect words for me to hear!

I am nervous but so excited about teaching this summer. I know that with God guiding me and with Him giving me the words, these teenagers will see the love of Christ! So bring on the challenges, the experiences, the laughter, the hardships, the worry....bring on camp!!!

As Scott put it "a summer at the beach loving on people for Jesus, what more could you ask for!"

Relating in lyrics

You know when hear a song and you think to yourself..."That artist totally wrote that song about me!"(clarification: NO I'm conceded and think songs are about me, I just relate to the song). I have these moments quite often. I can hear a song and immediately relate to what the artist was feeling or thinking at the time he/she wrote it or I can put myself as the person in the song... does that make sense?

Maybe I should explain by example:

There is a song called "Beautiful Disaster" written by Jon McLaughlin... I've been listening to this song for over a year and every time I hear it, I think "wow he read my mind and he totally has a grasp on my life was and still is."

1440 Minutes...

Time keeps on slipping into the future...

Yes, I know...that song is old, repetitive and somewhat cheesy but it's the song that came to mind when I was thinking about how fast my days go by! I am one of those people that try to fit way too much into one day only because I HATE missing out on things. I tend to over schedule just in case something falls through(stupid I know). But here's the thing, you are never promised tomorrow so you're suppose to live everyday like it's your last, right?

I guess I tend to think like that but a local pastor added to my thought process yesterday during our NAMB chapel service. He stated " You have 1440 minutes in a day! Use every one for God's glory." I've been thinking about it ever since. Here are the questions that can't escape my mind...

• Do I live each day for God's glory?
• Am I doing all I can to share His love?
• Am I being selfish with my time?

There are several more questions that come to mind but I'll spare you from a long list of answer less inquiries.

I have pondered all this over the last few hours...1440 minutes to make a difference today...How am I going to do this? (now I have the song from "Rent" in my head...529,600 Minutes, haha.)

Well anyway...now that I have two songs in my head involving several numbers, a few questions with some vague answers and a blog entry with no resolution, I leave you with a question.

What do you do each day with your 1440 minutes to make a difference and to live for God's glory???
